The Israel-Premier-Professor Tech cycling team excluded from withdrawing from the Vuelta as suggested by the technical director of the event after the pro-Palestinian demonstrations which notably disturbed the arrival of the 11th stage in Bilbao, Wednesday, September 3.
“Israel-Prime Tech is a professional cycling team and as such remains determined to participate in the Vuelta. Any other alternative would create a dangerous precedent in cycling sport not only for Israel-Prime Tech but for all teamssaid training in a press release. Israel-Prime Tech has several times expressed his respect for everyone's right to demonstrate, as long as these protests remain peaceful and do not compromise the security of the peloton “continues the team.
The technical director of the Vuelta, Kiko Garcia, had, previously, estimated that one of the solutions to end the events would be for the Israel-Prime Tech team to withdraw. “The situation is not easy and together we can seek a solution. For me, there is only one for the moment that would be that the Israel team itself realizes that its presence here does not facilitate the safety of all the others”he said in an interview with the channel Chain ser.
The massive presence of pro-Palestinian demonstrators on arrival in Bilbao led the organizers of the Tour of Spain to shorten the 11th stage, without appointing a winner, the last episode of a series of incidents that have been running for several days.
Since the departure on August 23, and especially since the arrival of the event in Spain on the 27th, daily demonstrations have gathered protest activists against the presence of the Israel ISRAEL TECH Israeli team on the third big round of the year. “As organizers, we cannot make decisions either because the regulations force us to run the teamhas noted Kiko Garcia. At this point, we are no longer concerned only with the protection of Israel, we are concerned about the protection of all “.
The international cycling union, for its part, “Farmly condemned the actions which led to the neutralization of the 11th stage of the Vuelta”, in a press release Wednesday. UCI believes that cycling “should in no case be instrumentalized as a sanction tool” and expresses “All its solidarity and support for teams and their staff as well as runners, who must be able to exercise their profession and passion in optimal security and serenity conditions”.
