We expected a new duel between the first two in the general classification, Jonas Vingaard and Joao Almeida. Finally, the 17th stage of the Vuelta took advantage of an outsider, Tuesday, September 10, at the alto of El Morredero. Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) lifted their arms alone after placing a decisive attack 3.5 km from the summit while the group of six favorites was marked. The 21 -year -old Italian, wearing the white jersey since the 7th stage, signs the very first professional victory of his career and took the opportunity to consolidate his fifth place in the general classification.
Behind, it is Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) who snatches second place and the six seconds of bonus that result from it. Jonas Vingegaard cut the line in fourth position and added two more seconds to his mattress in advance on Joao Almeida on the eve of the Valladolid time trial. The Danish now is 50 seconds ahead of the Portuguese, but neither of the two runners impressed on this mountain stage.
Vingegaard had however condemned the chances of the breakaway by rolling his teammates all afternoon. Head men have never counted more than 3 minutes ahead. The last representatives of the breakaway, including the Italian Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain-Victorious), were swallowed 11km from the summit. Six runners then detached themselves: Jonas Vingegaard, Joao Almeida, Tom Pidcock, Jai Hindley, Matthew Riccitelo and the winner of the day Giulio Pellizzari, younger winner of a stage of the Vuelta from Tadej Pogacar in 2019 (20).
The holding of this 17th stage was threatened both by the wind in the last ascent – we feared a shortening of the route -, but also by the continuation of the Propaletinian demonstrations. “We decided that in the event of an incident, we were going to neutralize the stage and stop running”had warned the Australian Jack Haig (Bahrain-Victorious) in the morning. The decision was made after a vote in which the representatives of the 23 teams in the running. Finally, no incident enamelled the race, which covered all the 143.2 km planned.
A new vote of team representatives is expected before each stage until the end of the race on Sunday. The race organization said that additional reinforcements are already planned in the police for the last two stages around Madrid.
