Involved in cocaine trafficking and condemned by Dutch justice last year, the former winger of the Netherlands and Ajax Amsterdam Quincy Promes was arrested in Dubai in March 2024. The 33-year-old was extradited to the Netherlands.

The former international footballer and ex-player of Ajax, Quincy Promes, was extradited from Dubai to the Netherlands, the Dutch prosecutors announced on Friday, after his conviction for having participated in the importation of more than a ton of cocaine. The former winger, found guilty of having contributed to the import of 1,363 tonnes of cocaine from Brazil in 2020, had been sentenced in February 2024 to six years in prison by a Dutch court.

In another case, the 33 -year -old had already been sentenced to 18 months in prison and to pay damages for stabbing his cousin during a dispute about a stolen collar. Calls are underway in both procedures. A spokesperson for the prosecution confirmed to AFP information from the local media that Promes was on the way to the Netherlands after his extradition.

Mixed with several cases

Promes had been arrested in Dubai in March 2024 but the Dutch prosecutors had specified that this concerned a local offense unrelated to current affairs in the Netherlands. The Dutch player had been arrested at Dubai airport for having fled the premises of a road accident, according to information broadcast at the time of the facts by public broadcasting NOS, citing Russian media.

Quincy Promes has worn the jersey of the Dutch national team 50 times, registering seven goals, and was part of the Czech Republic in the knockout stages of Euro 2020. It has not been selected since. In 2019, Promes joined Ajax Amsterdam from Sevilla FC for an amount of 15 million euros. In 2021, he left the Dutch capital for the Spartak Moscow, a club whose colors he had already worn between 2014 and 2018, during which he had been elected player of the year in Russia.
