The Barcelona star Marc-André Ter Stegen will face a crucial decision concerning his future in club and in selection in the coming weeks.

The German international returned to the front of the stage this month after having had to undergo a surgical operation for a persistent injury on the back.

Ter Stegen himself announced this news, adding that it would be unavailable for three months. This decision angered Barcelona leaders, who hope for at least four months for the German international, which would allow them to register Joan Garcia in Liga.

Barcelona applied a similar rule last season following a previous injury, with Wojciech Szczesny recruited in emergency.

However, Barcelona leaders believe that this time, Ter Stegen deliberately set its return to three months so that the club cannot use 80 % of its salary to recover a replacement, which has further damaged their relations.

The arrival of Garcia and the general cooling of relations between Ter Stegen and the club seem to have pushed it to the exit this summer.

Ter Stegen could be appointed captain

Ter Stegen could also be dismissed from his duties as captain of the club. According to Diario Sport, a decision on this subject will be made just before the start of the 2025/26 Liga season.

However, a persistent dispute within the club is only one aspect of the controversy: an absence of three months would deprive him of most of Germany's qualifications for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Ter Stegen was finally appointed number 1 of the German team, following the international retirement of Manuel Neuer, and Julian Nagelsmann supports his candidacy for next summer.

Despite his assurances to remain titular, if Ter Stegen has no position in Barcelona, Nagelsmann will not reintegrate him into the starting eleven in November.

According to the German newspaper Bild, Ter Stegen “must leave” Barcelona before the summer transfer window to prevent his World Cup dream from being annihilated. Good news for Monaco …
