The complete press release from the UCI
The International Cycling Union (UCI) became aware of the presence of Mr. Johan Bruyneel in the departure village of the Tour de France on July 17, 2025 in connection with its participation in Vive Le Bélo, a program of Belgian public television in Dutch language VRT1.
On October 25, 2018, Mr. Bruyneel was sanctioned by the Sports Arbitral Tribunal (CAS) of a life suspension for violation of anti -doping rules when he worked within the US Postal Services Pro Cycling Team and the Discovery Channel team.
In accordance with article 10.14 of the World Anti -Doping Code and the anti -doping rules of the UCI, Mr. Bruyneel is prohibited for life to exercise any activity related to cycling. If it is free to attend a cycling event recorded on the UCI international calendar such as the Tour de France, like any other spectator, he cannot, on the other hand, participate in the event, in any function or in any quality whatsoever, nor access areas not accessible to the public. This includes, in particular, access to areas of the Tour de France requiring accreditation.
Being suspended for life, Mr. Bruyneel was therefore not allowed to be present in the departure village, nor in the space of the teams of the Tour de France.
The UCI would like to add that the accreditation process on the Tour de France does not fall under its responsibility, but that of Amaury Sport Organization (ASO), the race organizer. The UCI confirms having contacted ASO in order to clarify if Mr. Bruyneel had been granted official accreditation, to understand how it could happen and to ensure that no other accreditation will no longer be issued to him.
The UCI stresses that it follows this case closely and will take all appropriate measures. No other comments will be made on this subject.
