The 3rd stage of Tour de France was marked by many incidents. Although most of the stage took place at a moderate pace, three significant falls disturbed the course of the race: a first during the intermediate sprint involving Jasper Philipsena second about 3 kilometers from the finish, and one last in the last 300 meters. The jury of the commissioners therefore rarely raged, since 4 runners were heavily sanctioned.

Coquard among the sanctioned runners

During the intermediate sprint, Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Edward Theuns (Lidl – ref) were both found guilty of maneuvers deemed irregular following the fall of Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-deceuninck). The jury inflicted a fine of 500 Swiss francs to them, a withdrawal of 13 points in the point classification, as well as a yellow card.

In the final sprint, the situation was still stretched. Davide Ballerini (XDS Astana Team) received the same sanction: 500 CHF fine, 13 penalty points, and a yellow card. But it is Danny van Poppel (Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe) which received the heaviest sanction. In addition to the usual financial and sporting penalties, the Dutch sprinter was relegated to 36th place in the classification of the stage (initially 8th) for irregular sprint. As a reminder, if one of these runners receives a second yellow card on this Tour de Franceit will be definitely excluded from the race.
