Tadej Pogacar alone in front and the rest of the peloton far behind. The races follow each other and look alike for the best cyclist of the moment. Organized for the first time in Africa, this world championship has everything of a trap.
Contested around Kigali, Rwanda, the event takes place in heat and humidity. More than three -quarters of the runners abandon, including French Julian Alaphilippe, double world champion in 2020 and 2021, victim of food poisoning.
At the top of the race, Pogacar takes place. Sure of his strength, he allows himself to attack very early, more than 100 kilometers from the finish, only followed by the Mexican del Toro and the Spaniard Ayuso. But Tadej Pogacar goes too fast for his escape companions. The Slovenian swallows the last 60 kilometers on his own, he won ahead of the Belgian Remco Evenepoel and the Irishman Ben Healy. The first Frenchman Paul Seixas finished 13th.
With nearly a million spectators present by the roads of Rwanda, Pogacar offers a triumph. “It was an incredible experience in every way. I am extremely happy and proud of what I achieved this week.”
Tadej Pogacar therefore won a second title of world champion, two months after winning the Tour de France for the fourth time. At only 27 years old, he added a new trophy to his narcotic record.
