Richard Carapaz returns to success. Six years after his last stage victory over the Giro, the Equatorian won solo the 11th stage of the Tour of Italy on Wednesday, May 21. Strategic, the runner EF Education-Easy Post's brought his attack 9 km from the finish, in the rise of Pietra di Bismantova, when the peloton took over the morning escape from five runners. Never caught up, the Equatorian signed at 32, his 4th victory over the Giro, by ahead of the Isaac Del Toro pink jersey (UAE Emirates) and the Italian Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek).

“This victory is special, I felt this morning that I had good sensations”said the 2021 Olympic champion on arrival. “This tour is very open, there are still a lot of kilometers to do before arriving in Rome (…) This victory gives me morale, everything is possible”he warned.

Particularly anticipated, the stage of the day – which had three listed passes including the ascent of the Alpe San Pellegrino (13.7 km at 8.4 %, with passages at 19 %) – did not disappoint. After several attempts, a breakaway of five runners, including Colombian Nairo Quintana (Movistar), only formed a hundred kilometers from the finish.
