An appointment with a forgotten to leave the Pyrenees. For its third and last day in the Pyrenean massif, Saturday July 19, the Tour de France will conclude its 14th stage, part of Pau, in the station of Luchon-Superbagnères, more visited since the victory of Robert Millar in 1989 due to an impracticable bridge. The tourist resort, which overlooks Bagnères-de-Luchon, had been in 1986 the Théâtre du decline by Bernard Hinault, supposed to support Greg Lemond, but who had attacked his teammate before collapsing. Will we see another moment of history being written on Saturday?
What is the profile?
After Hautacam on Thursday, the Grande Boucle will face two other off-category passes during this 14th stage which will have 4,950 m of elevation gain, the 2nd higher total of this 112nd edition (after the 18th edition at the Col de la Loze). The runners will first swallow the Tourmalet (19 km at 7.4%) after the intermediate sprint 70 kilometers from the finish, before making a slide to climb the Aspin collar (2nd cat., 5 km at 7.6%) then that of Peyresourde (1st cat., 7.1 km at 7.8%), the summit of which will be located 32 km from the finish.
After the descent to Bagnères-de-Luchon, the runners will start the long climb to Superbagnères (12.4 km at 7.3%). Who will succeed Federico Bahamontes, Bernard Hinault and Greg Lemond, all winners at the top of the Pyrenean station?
Who are the favorites?
Tadej Pogacar (UAE TEMA Emirates XRG) or a runner who left for an escape. This is what the chances of victory could be summed up on Saturday. Like his new demonstration in Peyragudes on Friday, the Slovenian devours this Tour de France, and if he checked this stage, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike), Remco Evenepoel (Sudal Quick-Step) and the other podium contenders will have a hard time preventing it from ravaging a 22nd victory on the Tour.
If the yellow jersey decides to show leniency, then the breakaway could be won for the third time only on this edition, after Ben Healy (EF Education-Easypost) and Simon Yates (Visma-Lease a Bike). The Frenchman Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious), who plays the mountain ranking, Michael Storer, Ben O'Connor, Thymen Arensman, Michael Woods or Mattias Skjelmose, won to the general, will undoubtedly be the designated candidates again.
