In the summer of 2018, OM thought he was hitting a big blow by attracting Kevin Strootman, then considered a Taulier of AS Roma and a major reinforcement to strengthen the ambition of the McCourt project. Cost of the operation: 25 million euros and a monthly salary estimated at 500,000 euros gross. But very quickly, the dream turned into a nightmare. In difficulty on the physical level, irregular in his performances, and unable to establish himself as a real leader, Strootman has become one of the biggest failures of the Marseille club over the last decade. Despite several loans, his contract has continued to lead Marseille finances to his final departure.
Henderson, a second Strootman?
For a few days, Jordan Henderson's name has been circulating on the side of the Canebière. Free after two seasons at Ajax, the former Liverpool captain represents an opportunity on paper: experienced profile, natural leadership, exemplary mentality. But at just 35 years old, and after several seamless seasons, English today seems to be losing speed. A risky bet, which sorely recalls the Strootman file. Even if it is free, his arrival could lead to the same sports disillusions, without real added value in the medium term.
A blow to try?
Last winter, OM bet on Ismaël Bennacer, loaned by AC Milan. Also experienced, the Moroccan did not convince in Marseille. Small physical shape, lack of rhythm and big salary, the Algerian is an example, like Kevin Strootman, that the CV is not everything. The Henderson file is a real risk -taking. Would OM be ready to try it?
