He had been around since the start of this Tour of Spain, he who had already collected five top 10 but without winning. This 15th stage between Veiga/Vegadeo and Monforte de Lemos was the right one for Mads Pedersen, who won the sprint in front of Orluis Aurlar (Movistar) and Marco Frigo (Israel Premier-Tech), Sunday, September 7.
The green jersey, second behind David Gaudu during the 3rd stage, was present in the huge breakaway of the day that counted Almost 50 runners, allowing the peloton to close the curtain for the day. Jay Vine, already a double stage winner on this edition, and Louis Vervaeke have been trying to spin in a duo for a time, before seeing a group of seven runners with in particular the winner of the day and Egan Bernal (ineos grenadiers) take them back eight kilometers from the finish.
The Danish, scarecrow of the group for the Sprint which was announced, took its responsibilities by launching from afar, while Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) slipped into the last turn. He harvested his 60th professional victory, his 11th in the big tour and his 4th on the Vuelta, he who had already gleaned three in 2022. “We were very hungry. It was starting to weigh not to win. Today, it was one of the most beautiful victories we could have. We worked a lot, doubted, we did it”welcomed his teammate Julien Bernard at the microphone of Eurosport. “The first victory is the hardest to get. I am moved because it is a collective victory. These are victories that weigh and which we remember”continued the Frenchman.
The race was marked by an incident 56 kilometers from the finish when a demonstrator, decked out in a flag, arose from a thicket, taking the direction of the peloton. If he fell into the ditch before reaching the road, it sparked a wave in the peloton, accentuated by the passage of a member of the police just in front of the group's head. The Spanish runner of Movistar, Javier Romo, notably dropped following this movement.
