The suspense stood until the arrival. At the end of a massive sprint, Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) won at the end of the second stage, Monday, June 9, connecting Prémilhat (Allier) to Issoire (Puy-de-Dôme), while the peloton remained grouped until the last two kilometers. The Italian runner thus signs his 6th success of the season, his first on the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Impressive of ease of the end and perfectly led by his team, who helped him return to the peloton after being distant in the coast of the Château de Buron (2nd category), he is ahead of the British Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious) and the Dutch Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck). The first Frenchman, Paul Penhoët (Groupama-FDJ), finished fifth in the stage.

In the general classification, the Italian sprinter takes hold of the yellow jersey that Tadej Pogacar had conquered on Sunday (UAE-Emirates XRG) by winning the first step. Both counted in the same second, they are ahead of Mathieu van der Poel to the general. Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike), who had only nine races in the legs before the Critérium du Dauphiné after his concussion occurred during the 5th stage of Paris-Nice, points for the time in fifties of the General, in front of the first French Hugo Page (Intermarché-Wanty).

For his part, Paul Ourselin led his boat as best they could on this second stage. The Cofidis runner, who had announced to attack to take points in the mountain classification, keeps the bounted climber jersey, with eight more points, and played the price of combativeness on Monday. Despite his slight advance at the start of the stage, the Frenchman was distanced 59 km from the arrival in the coast of the Château de Buron.

Finally, Romain Bardet offered his supporters a great attack in the last coast of the day, the Côte de Nonette, located 20 km from the finish, before the peloton catches up with it.
