Real Madrid explores a bold track for the post-modric: a young talent still unknown could soon land in Bernabeu.

While Luka Modric saw his last days in the white jersey, Real Madrid already activates the track of his successor. And this time, it was an astonishing profile that caught the attention of Madrid decision-makers, against the tide of usual rumors.

According to the Spanish press, it is the young Kees Smit, midfielder of Az Alkmaar, who is now interested in Real. The 19-year-old, the Dutchman was crowned best player of the last Euro U19, where he greatly contributed to the coronation of the Netherlands with four goals. A feat that precipitated his return to the Madrid shelves, after a first tracking in Youth League in 2023.

Real Madrid: A nugget of Az Alkmaar to replace Modric?

Real Madrid: A nugget of Az Alkmaar to replace Modric?

Smit has played 31 matches this season with AZ, for two goals and two assists. A modest assessment for a player promised to replace a real monument. His contract runs until 2028, and nothing guarantees that he will cross the course. But his precocity and his intelligence of play seduce Xabi Alonso, who would see in him a model profile.

Succession of Modric: Madrid ready to try a new young bet

Bringing on a raw talent to take over from Modric would be an unusual strategy for Madrid. Admittedly, Bellingham succeeded, but he had already proven his value in the Bundesliga. Real has not always been successful with the Dutch players: Sneijder, Robben or Huntelaar have all left the club without leaving a lasting trace.

By moving towards Smit, Madrid takes a calculated risk. But succeed Modric asks much more than talent: it is a question of scope and consistency. And Smit, despite his promises, will have to prove that he can win where so many others have broken their teeth.
