The situation of Olympique Lyonnais is seriously darkening after a succession of backhands. Initially reassured before their passage in front of the DNCG, the Lyon leaders were struck by an unexpected decision: The club is demoted in Ligue 2. This news caused a shock wave in the Lyon sports environment.

Faced with this sanction, OL immediately appealed, hoping to reverse the trend. However, the justifications of the DNCG, insisting on the absence of concrete financial elements in the files presented by the club, seem difficult to question. The club is thus found in a precarious position, threatened on several fronts.

The European future of Lyon is also compromised. According to information, OL was in discussion with UEFA for a “negotiated agreement” which would have enabled it to participate in the Europa League, for financial sanctions. But administrative relegation calls for everything.

The European body has indeed specified that this agreement would become deciduous if the descent in Ligue 2 was confirmed. Direct consequence: Olympique Lyonnais would be excluded from any European competition for the coming season. Such exclusion would deprive the club of an essential source of income.

This loss of European revenue accentuates the threat of a bankruptcy, a dreaded scenario in the corridors of the club. The leaders find themselves urgently to find a solution to ensure the financial and sporting survival of OL, while the prospects are reduced.

On the sporting level, the potential relegation of Lyon would lead to a redistribution of European places. The RC Strasbourg, who finished just behind OL in the league, would inherit the ticket for the Europa Leaguewhile The RC Lens would access the League Conference. This context upsets the usual hierarchy of French football.
