After a weekend concluded by two massive sprints, the peloton will be entitled to its first mountain stage in the Massif Central, Monday, on the eve of the rest day.

After the two “naps” stages of the weekend, concluded by victories at the Sprint de Jonathan Milan in Laval then by Tim Merlier in Châteauroux, the peloton advances towards the Pyrenees by stopping on Monday, July 14, in the Massif Central, as last year. On the eve of the first day of rest, in Toulouse on Tuesday, will we see Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar gauging on the ramps from Mont-Dore to Puy de Sancy?

What is the profile?

This is the first mountain stage of this 112nd edition, and it is the only one in the Massif Central. There are 4,450 meters of elevation gain throughout the 165.3 km of routes which arrives at Mont-Dore Puy de Sancy, city-stage of the Tour for the first time. In this route around Clermont-Ferrand, eight difficulties are listed, all 2nd category except one in 3rd category, the Col de la Croix Morand (3.4 km at 5.7 %).

No rest time is to be expected during this 10th stage, since the difficulties, not the stiff either of this edition, will be linked tirelessly until the arrival, located at the top of the Puy de Sancy after a final ramp of 3.3 km at 8%.

What favorites?

As in Lioran last year, will we see an explanation between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard in the Massif Central? The Slovenian had believed the Danish distance, who had ended up returning and jumping on the line. This year, the yellow jersey expects the Visma-Lease A Bike training to attack. “We can expect them to try something. It is a fairly open race. It is not the more difficult profile that is but there is an opportunity to try something”anticipated Pogacar, who lost Joao Almeida on Sunday.

A favorite can therefore win on Monday, but you can also have a two-step race, with a Pugacar-Vvelgegaard fight far behind the escape which is competing for the victory. Because many should try to train it – and in particular the French on this national day – as the occasions for the backpackers are rare now. Lenny Martinez, Harold Tejada, Ben O'Connor, Pablo Castrillo or Luke Plapp can be candidates.
