“In France we are quite hypocritical, we will always look for the little beast”
Freshly arrived in the training Groupama-FDJ, Guillaume Martin was asked about the way he tackled this new Tour de France : “It is certain that there have been a lot of changes at least since last year, however it is a race that I start to know well, that, that has not changed. So with the experience I have, I know that the question I have often been repeated is whether I aim for the steps or the general, it does not have to be too much because it is often the thing that decides for you, and perhaps more this year with the week we are going to have, which promises to be quite trash. In any case, it is in my nature to waste time voluntarily but I think that it will be clearing up fairly quickly depending on the real condition and any facts. In any case, it is sure that since the beginning of the year, I feel good in the team, at the Groupama-FDJ, and it translates into certain results, but in general in my feelings and I think I am thinking about this tour in good conditions.”
Accustomed to places of honor in the general classification, he was also questioned about his ambitions and objectives for the three weeks of racing: “In France we are quite hypocritical, we will always look for the little beast …. We complain about having to have a French runner who has been winning for 40 years, But at the same time we joke runners … This is also what I am capable of, but I do not take the start at all to win the general classification. So it will rather be in the waters of what I may have done in the past. But now, thinking of young people, for example, of young talents who arrive in the French peloton. You must first be able to make a tenth place, a seventh place, before thinking about victory. If you never take that, if you never get into this race for regularity, obviously you will never be able to play the general. “
