Zapping Foot National Interview – The underside of amateur football, with Romain Molina

Heavy heart but head high. After 173 games in yellow and green, Pedro Chirivella leaves FC Nantes. At 28, the Spanish environment has signed up with Panathinaikókós, the current resident of the Greek championship. The amount of the transfer is estimated at 2 million euros, a modest sum but which relieves the finances of the club, anxious to readjust its wage grid. Arrived free in 2020 after a trainer at Liverpool, Chirivella quickly established himself as a framework of the Nantes locker room. Recognizable by his quality of pass and his sense of game, he rose to the rank of captain, playing 173 games in the Nantes jersey (4 goals, 9 assists), including 32 this season. The culmination of his Nantes adventure obviously remains the victory in the French Cup in 2022, against Nice, an unforgettable memory for the supporters as for the player. “This is where I played my best football. After the first season, I knew that I had found my football house,” he said last March, aware that his story with the club was coming to an end.

This transfer marks a new stage in the site started by the Nantes management. After the departures of Moses Simon at Paris FC (€ 7 million) and Douglas Augusto in Krasnodar (€ 6.5 million), it is a third frame that packs this summer. FC Nantes, 13th in Ligue 1 during the last exercise, therefore begins a deep restructuring, both sporty and economic. For Chirivella, passed through the academies of Valencia and Liverpool before being loaned to the Netherlands and Spain, this departure in Greece sounds like a new challenge. He was already on departure last summer, without finding a satisfactory destination. This time, the opportunity has materialized. In Athens, he should find a central role in a club accustomed to European jousts.
