Bradley Wiggins is gradually coming back down the hill, but he has a lot to say. As his autobiography “The Chain” comes out on October 23, the winner of the 2012 Tour de France spoke in a long interview with Times (article in English, paid), evoking in particular his descent into hell after his career, ended in 2016, with bankruptcy and an addiction to cocaine, which he had already revealed last May.
He also looks back on his career with the Sky team, which became Ineos-Grenadiers in 2020, where he was the first of four different winners of the Grande Boucle for the British team before Chris Froome (2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017), Geraint Thomas (2018) and Egan Bernal (2019).
'Sir' Wiggins discusses doping charges against him, including leaking in 2016 of data held by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and who had revealed his therapeutic use authorizations (TUE) for injections of a prohibited steroid, triamcinolone, to treat his asthma before three major races (the Tour 2011 and 2012, and the Giro in 2013).
“Something bigger was afoot.” says the five-time Olympic champion. “Ils (the Sky team) threw me under a bus (translated into French as “They sacrificed me”).” To protect another runner? “Oui”responds the rider with 35 road victories. Does he have any suspicions about who it could be? “Oui”, he continues. “The truth will eventually come out.”conclut Bradley Wiggins.
