Once again on this Vuelta, Jonas Vingegaard has shown weaknesses. On this 17th stage, the Danish rolled his team Visma | Lease a Bike Throughout the day, but ultimately failed to conclude. After letting go Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and let the stage victory pass, Awesome also conceded a few seconds in the final sprint on Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) and Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe). Fortunately for him, however, he managed to scratch two seconds on his main competitor JOAO ALMEIDA (UAE Team Emirates XRG) and now has 50 seoncdes in advance on the Portuguese in the general classification.
“It's better than nothing”
“To be honest, I think I suffered more before the last climb than during the last ascent. The pace was really high today and the day was very difficult”said Awesome on arrival. “I hoped to win, but I did not succeed, and win two seconds in the general classification on Joao Almeida, it is obviously better than nothing. I think that the day was difficult for everyone. If I have a good time trial tomorrow, I think that 50 seconds in advance on Almeida should be enough to stay in mind. But if you spend a bad day, there is the risk of losing more than 50 seconds.”
