Samuel Umtiti could find his former club, Lyon, free from any contract. The defender also plans to retire after a long absence.

Since the fence of the transfer window, Lyon has explored several tracks to strengthen his defense. A well -known name for Lyon supporters emerged: Umtiti. Free of any contract after a mixed passage in Lille, the winner of the 2018 World Cup would seriously consider a return to the club which saw its beginnings.

The defensive needs of Lyon are glaring. The prolonged unavailability of Moussa Niakhate and Clinton Mata, due to winter absences linked to commitments for the African Cup of Nations, obliges the Rhone club to anticipate. The daily newspaper says that the club management actively studies the possibility of bringing Umtiti back. A risky bet, because the 31-year-old defender comes out of two difficult seasons with Lille, having been reduced to 13 appearances in 2023-24 following an injury that deprived him of all last season.

Umtiti could return to Lyon after nine years.

Last match played in January 2024.

According to the same source, the former Barça player is physically ready and has no intention of hanging up the crampons. After a period of reflection at the beginning of the month, he would have decided to continue to evolve at the highest level. A scenario that visibly appeals to Lyon, where the player always occupies a place of choice in the hearts of supporters. Discussions have already taken place between the Gones and Umtiti, proving that the idea is far from unrealistic.
