
The world of cycling is in mourning after the disappearance ofIván Meléndez Luque. The Spanish runner, 17, died on Saturday following a fall during the JUNIOR TO THE RIBERA DEL DURO. The accident occurred during the 2nd stage. The severity of the fall led the race management to temporarily neutralize the test, due to the lack of available ambulances. But after the recovery, the news of the death of the young runner fell. In tribute, the peloton crossed the grouped line, the thought turned towards his missing companion. The 3rd and last stage, scheduled for this Sunday, has been canceled.

A black series for cycling
The international cycling union reacted in a press release: “The UCI deplores the tragic death of the Spanish cyclist Iván Méléndez Luque (Tenerife-Cabberty U19 Team), which occurred following a fall during the Vuelta to the Ribera in Spain. We present our sincere condolences to his family, friends and the cycling community.” A meditation ceremony was held this Sunday morning in Aranda del Duero, open to the public.
This drama is part of a black series for cycling. In July, Italian Samuele Privitera (19 years old) had lost his life on the Val d'Aosta Tourwhile in June, the Turkish Mustafa Ayyorkun (21 years old) died during the Iran's tour. Last year, André Drege et Muriel Furrer had also died in competition.
