The news concerning the entry into force of the superligue remained relatively silent, despite the declarations of its CEO Bernd Reichart last year, according to which the competition could come into force next month.

Barcelona and Real Madrid remain the only clubs to publicly support the idea, although Reichart also declared in private that sixty clubs had supported him anonymously.

In 2024, A22, the organizing company of the Superligue and led by Reichart, gave a press conference detailing the format of a potential Superligue, with three divisions including 96 teams and a promotion and relegation system between the leagues. The main idea that made the titles was the possibility of creating a free streaming platform, “Unify”, around the world, allowing spectators to follow the matches.

A22 announces his second year of losses

Last year, A22 had recorded a loss of € 200,000, but this time, the losses of the company reached 5.5 million euros, a sport explaining that this endangered it. A22 is one of the three companies that Barcelona and Real Madrid work on this issue, the others being European Superleague Company and European Superleague Marketing.

A22 explains this situation by its investment in the Unify platform. In 2022, the company recorded a turnover of 7.2 million euros and a profit of 1.9 million euros, but to date, it has no source of income other than the payments of Barcelona and Real Madrid. Marca specifies that these payments are not official and require no commitment from A22.

A22 belongs to Anel Capital SL, itself held by the business banker Anas Laghrari and John Carl Hahn, of the Providence investment company and formerly of Morgan Stanley. Laghrari is a key figure in Real Madrid, advising President Florentino Perez, notably on the club change change project. Given the figures at stake and the ability of Laghrari and Hahn to obtain funding, it would be surprising that they do not find a way to avoid bankruptcy.

Joan Laporta's announcement on the Superligue

Recently, the president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, dropped a bomb by revealing that Barcelona and Real Madrid were in negotiations with UEFA to create a new competition, making the superligue superfluous. He also pointed out that the streaming platform was one of the subjects on which the discussions had the most advanced.
